Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge is one of Britain’s favourite challenge events. It is also the ‘original’ 3 peaks with the first having been completed by two school teachers back in 1887. It is a testing 24 mile circular route through the beautiful and dramatic Yorkshire Dales taking in the peaks of Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. The latter two are the highest and second highest points in Yorkshire respectively and all three clear 2000 feet by ample margins. The aim is to complete the challenge in under 12 hours.

The spectacular scenery of the area is a direct result of its unique geology of carboniferous layered limestone interspersed with shales and sandstones capped on the higher parts by Millstone Grit. The route also passes alongside the Ribblehead viaduct, the most impressive feature of the historic Settle to Carlisle railway line.

With a total ascent of 4750 feet, this is a tough event that will push you mentally and physically. It is an epic day which is by turns exhausting, magnificent, punishing and exhilarating. With the rewards of breath-taking views and sense of achievement, this is an entirely unforgettable adventure.

The event usually starts at either Horton in Ribblesdale or Ribblehead.
