The RAFA Helvellyn Duathlon
Take on the RAFA Helvellyn Duathlon – a fully guided hike and bike micro event which involves cycling a multi terrain loop of Thirlmere followed by a hike up England’s second highest mountain, Helvellyn! We base ourselves at the north east side of Thirlmere at Legburthwaite, St Johns in the Vale.
Book Your Place Now!
This ‘micro challenge event’ is limited to 18 participants split into three teams of six (or smaller if necessary).
There are two event dates, Saturday 11th September and Saturday 9th October 2021. This is a bespoke micro event just for RAFA participants.
Whilst we absolutely anticipate some friendly rivalry between the teams, please note this is not a competitive individual race! However challenging yourselves to get round quickly and as a team is very much part of the day!
Two teams will start on the bike section with a 5 minute gap between, whilst the third team will start the hike first.
Bike Route
The route is a pleasant mixture of tarmac and track which completely circumnavigates Thirlmere. The first section is undulating track along the shores of Thirlmere. We then cross the dam at the northern end then follow the unclassified road on the eastern side of the Lake. This road section which is also a designated cycle route gives fabulous views across the Lake to Helvellyn Screes and Helvellyn itself. The last third of the route is a track section through forest. It’s here that much of the cycle route climb is, but once done we get to enjoy great views over to the Borrowdale Fells.
Either a mountain bike or hybrid bike is suitable for this route. Adventure Trails can provide suitable bikes, helmets and accessories on request.
Hike Route
As well as Helvellyn this hike takes in the additional peaks of Lower Man (925m) and Nethermost Pike (891m) – 3 peaks in one hike! Climbing up from Swirl Howe we are rewarded with amazing views back over Thirlmere. We take in Lower Man first, then look down over the sweeping ridge of Swirral Edge before following the summit ridge up to Helvellyn itself (949m). Continuing along the summit ridge we get to look down over the dramatic Striding Edge and Red Tarn before our final peak of Nethermost Pike (891m). We then drop down to Wythburn and follow the forestry path to the finish.
