Scafell Pike from Langdale

Climbing Scafell Pike (978m, 3208ft) from Langdale is noticeably longer than the shortest route from Wasdale, however it can be a more convenient start point for those staying in the Ambleside area.

Setting off from Old Dungeon Ghyll car park, we have a relatively level walk up to the head of the Langdale Valley. From here we start climbing on the path alongside Rosset Gill up to Angle Tarn then up to Esk Hause. We pass close to the impressive peak of Great End and admire the views over to Borrowdale in the north. The going then gets noticeably rougher as the path crosses a boulder field and a couple of steep sections between Broad Crag and our final goal of Scafell Pike summit.

On the return route, we can follow the same route, though we have options.

If legs permit, we can bag any of the following additional peaks; Broad Crag, Ill Crag, Great End or Rosset Pike. After dropping back into Langdale we have one final decision to make; whether to have celebratory drink and bite to eat in the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel Hikers Bar! This is a lovely spot with slate floor, open fire and geared up for the hungry and thirsty hiker.

Kit List

The following essential kit is required for this walk. Once a booking has been made, further advice on kit will be included. This may include tips and recommendations, and suggestions on less vital ‘nice to have’ kit.

Suitable walking boots or shoes.

General hill walking boots with ankle support and sole unit with good grip are ideal.

Waterproof jacket and trousers.

The jacket should have a hood. Shell jackets or insulated waterproof jackets are both good. Insulated ones can determine your choice of clothing.

Suitable clothes for walking.

Wear what works for you, but not jeans! Walking trousers are ideal. A non cotton base layer with wicking properties helps keep you dry and comfortable.

Spare warm top.

A fleece or warm jumper/jacket that you can carry or stow easily is advised.

Food

Snacks as well as a light prepared lunch are ideal. Some easily portable fruit is recommended.

Water/ drink.

Bottle or ‘bladder’ with at least 1 litre capacity.

Hat and gloves.

The temperature at the walk start may be ambient, but can then be biting cold on the summit – be prepared!

Fitness & Health

For some this can be a strenuous walk. You need to have a basic level of fitness and for some this will involve some training beforehand. Also note that the path crosses a boulderfield and has a couple of reasonably steep sections. Feel free to discuss it with us before you book. On booking we will provide advice on training before the event.
